Here's the guide you should follow to use Xperia Companion to fix your Xperia smartphones!

How do I perform a software update or a software repair on my smartphone or tablet?

You should update the software on your device to get the latest functionality and enhancements in order to ensure optimal performance. Also, if you have a problem with your phone or tablet, one of the first things you should try is a software update or a software repair.
Note! If possible, you should always back up all personal data before performing a software repair. All data in the internal memory is overwritten during a software repair. Content on an external SD card is kept.

A. Updating the system software of an Xperia™ device

You can check for new software for your Xperia™ device using a wireless connection and the Software update application on your device. However, some updates may not be available for wireless download. In such cases, you must then check for new software using a USB cable and a computer on which the Xperia™ Companion application is installed.

Tip: Make sure that your device is fully charged before performing a software update.

A1. Checking for new software wirelessly

Use the Software update application to update your device wirelessly. The updates that you can download over the Internet directly on your Xperia™ device depend on your operator. It is recommended to use a Wi-Fi® network instead of a mobile network to download new software so that you can avoid data traffic costs.

To check for new software

If you are using a device with multiple users, make sure you are logged in as the owner.
From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
Find and tap Settings > About phone/tablet > Software update. If no new software is available, it’s possible that you may not have enough free memory on your device. If your Xperia™ device has less than 500 MB of free internal memory (device memory) available, you do not receive any information about new software. The following notification appears in the Notification panel to warn of the lack of storage space: Storage space running out. Some system functions may not work. If you receive this notification, you must free up internal memory (device memory) before you can get notifications about new software being available.

Tip: To manually check for software updates in the Software update application, tap the Refresh button. Alternatively, tap the menu button (three vertical dots) and then tap Refresh.

A2. Checking for new software using a computer

To perform a software update using a computer

1.Computer: If it is not already installed, download and install the Xperia™ Companion application.
2.Open the Xperia™ Companion application..

3.Connect your Xperia™ device to the computer using a USB cable.

4.Xperia™ device: If prompted, in the Use USB for dialog, tap Transfer files (MTP).
5.Computer: After a few moments, the Xperia™ Companion application detects your device and searches for new software for it. If a new software update is detected, a popup window appears on the computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to update your Xperia™ device.
6.To manually check for new software, on the Xperia™ Companion home screen under Manage your Xperia, click Software update.

B. Performing a software repair

If the problem with the device still remains after a software update, try to perform a software repair using the Xperia™ Companion application.

Important information before you perform a software repair:

  • All data will be deleted from the device when you perform a software repair. Photos, videos, music and documents stored on an external SD card are not deleted. If possible, make sure that you back up data stored on the internal storage that you want to keep before performing a software repair.
  • Make sure you know your Google™ account username and password. Depending on your security settings, your Xperia™ device may lock after a repair procedure. You then need to enter your Google™ account username and password in order to use the device.
  • If you don't remember your Google™ account username and password, you cannot unlock the device yourself. You can however try to recover your Google™ account username and password using the Google Account Recovery page at https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery/?hl=en. If you still can't reactivate your device, contact us.
  • For Xperia™ X series and Xperia™ Z5 series devices, you must be aware that when you receive a new Google™ username or password, you cannot use them to log in to and recover your device for 72 hours.
